What is “Inside Impact?”
We started the Inside Impact podcast for two reasons:
- To showcase the brilliant impacts businesses are making in their communities
- To give you some ideas, strategies, and mindsets for how you can help impact your own community
Whether it’s your local neighborhood or the entire planet, serving your community is rewarding but has its challenges too. Our host, Alisa Herr, knows just how important it is to hear these stories straight from the people inside the action. That's why she's using the Inside Impact podcast to showcase these amazing organizations and the work they do with hopes that these stories inspire you.
Meet the Host
Alisa Herr
Founder & CEO, Unity Web Agency
Alisa always knew she wanted to help people, but was never really sure how she'd do it. In college, she majored in psychology because she was fascinated with people. Interestingly, she landed in her first psychology class by chance only after dropping a business course... because she thought it was filled with stupid busy work.
At the same time, Alisa was quietly honing her skills as a programmer. She was a middle schooler in the early days of the world-wide-web when first learned how to code — but she always considered it “just a hobby.” It wasn’t until Alisa graduated with a Master’s in Library Science that she ultimately found her footing as a woman in tech. Unable to land a job as a librarian during the Great Recession's hiring freeze, she eventually was hired as a part-time junior web developer at a design firm. Over four years, she worked her way up to be the lead developer, overseeing a team of three other developers.

That path eventually led to Alisa becoming the founding CTO of a media nonprofit focused on supporting public education. She enjoyed several years of building the publication platform and reporting on STEM education. This is where she discovered her passion for sharing inspiring stories of people making positive impacts on their communities.
However, Alisa eventually realized that she wanted to build something of her own.
Throughout her professional career, she always felt like her life was being driven by other people and she was just along for the ride. That led her to launch Unity Web Agency (then Unity Digital Agency) in 2016 as a business with a mission to make a positive impact on her home state of North Carolina.
